Introducing DR. NELSON

Erik Nelson, Psy.D. is a postdoctoral fellow who approaches therapy with genuineness and empathy and is passionate about helping clients find hope, healing, and reach their full potential. Dr. Nelson’s therapeutic style has been described as warm, easy to connect with, and insightful. He helps clients grow in self-awareness by understanding how their relationship to self and interpersonal relationships shape their beliefs, values, and life trajectory.  His approach also emphasizes the ways that early life experiences connect to current struggles.  Dr. Nelson provides individual, couple, and family therapy for all ages. Dr. Nelson has experience with many therapy concerns including identity development, depression, anxiety, boundary setting, life transitions, organizational abuse, and faith integration. He primarily incorporates systems and psychodynamic theory into his work.

Educational and Career Background

Erik Nelson is a doctoral graduate in Counseling Psychology (PsyD) from Northwest University with an undergraduate degree in business administration and extensive psychology-focused training across multiple settings. He completed his fifth-year doctoral internship at Texas State University.  Dr. Nelson’s doctoral dissertation focused on self-compassion as a protective factor against burnout. His clinical experience includes psychotherapy and psychological assessment with diverse populations, ranging from children to adults, in university counseling centers, outpatient clinics, and a community health center, with an emphasis on issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance abuse.   In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Nelson brings decades of prior professional experience as a sales and marketing professional working in Fortune 200 environments. Throughout his corporate work, he was nationally recognized for his corporate achievements and has held various leadership roles.  Dr. Nelson’s combined background reflects a unique blend of expertise and strong interpersonal and leadership skills developed in both clinical and corporate settings. While in pursuit of his license to practice as a psychologist, Dr. Nelson will serve as a postdoctoral fellow for Great Life Counselling Center under the supervision of Kevin C. Lambert, Psy.D., MBA.
